flowers & coffee

a hand drawn 2D animation

overview

This animation was a semester-long project for my 2D animation class. Flowers and Coffee tells the story of Mitsu, a grumpy barista who makes the best lattes, and Jeremy, the florist who – unbeknownst to Mitsu – works at the shop next to her. When Jeremy finally works up the courage to offer a flower to the cute but scary barista next door while picking up his drink, Mitsu suddenly finds her day a little less gloomier than usual.

starting off

We started by coming up with a pitch for our idea, then creating a storyboard for our animation. During this stage, I thought extensively about the characters and plot I wanted for my animation, and created some rough designs.

style test

Creating a style test helped me to figure out what kind of level of visual detail I wanted for my animation.

animating!

Finally it was time to animate. We started by creating a rough animatic of our work, then recreated it in detail on our chosen animation softwares.
I had two challenges: learning a new animation software (Clip Studio Paint) and drawing hundreds of individual frames since I was doing a frame by frame style.
